The
new video game crazy to hit the market is Fortnite! Yes, I play it and yes,
it’s a little addicting, especially when your friends are online at the same time! The brand is everywhere I look, my social media is crowded with ads, videos and
memes which bring my attention to the game. According to PCgamesn.com the video
game had “125 million total players” worldwide (Jones. A, - 2018)!
Hard
to think that you could make a living of playing a video game, but now it's possible! It's
slowly becoming a new profession for many people today. Twitch in my mind is
becoming the best tool for people who consider themselves good at video games to
gain views through the online streaming platform and showcase their skills! While the streamers skills are interesting to watch the thing that keeps people coming back for more is their personality. Streamers who are funny and have good commentary are more likely to retain views than those who are less interesting and exciting to watch.
Fortnite’s business model
The
E-shop business model fits this video game as you cannot purchase the game
instore but online through your specific gaming platform, for example; PlayStation
or Xbox (Chaffey.D & Ellis-Chadwick.F - 2016)! The game is free to download
but the catch is to unlock new items, avatars and dance moves it will cost you
money. That’s not crazy to think that if every one of those 125 million players
purchased an avatar for $15 that Fortnite or epic games who own the game would
be very wealthy (Jones. A - 2018).
Social
media also plays a role in the success of the video game. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitch and YouTube always have what is trending now
and why not Fortnite (Dr. Saravananakumar. M & Dr SuganthaLakshmi. T - 2012)!
And no wonder the video game as been played by most of the planet! The game is
now available on mobile, so download ads are a regular on all devices these
days even if you have the game you might experience this. This can be done from
the website, which creates the B2C model where their product is sold to the
consumer (Hoßbach. N, Wiener. M, Saunders. C.S - 2016). This is the same as the in game purchases, the B2C model helps Epic
Games market their product too, making it easier for players to access the items
they wish. The main attraction is V-bucks, the in-game currency, and the battle
pass, the in-game challenges to unlock new items. And the only way to purchase
the in-game currency is online! How simple!
Fortnite’s Revenue Model
“The revenue
model describes how revenues are collected by a firm through selling its
products and services” (Isaksson. J & Sjogren. J - 2016). The revenue model of the game is through in game purchases
(Epic Games Inc - 2018). This when players purchase in game currency online. Once
purchased they can then spend on other parts of the game such as the battle
pass. This is the main form of revenue for the game and a very effective one with
the amount of money the game is making!
